Organizing a clear disagreement with an IRS notice

A specific explanation supported by labeled documents is easier to follow than a long general complaint.

Start with your situation

Number the exhibits and reference each one in the cover explanation. Keep an exact copy of the submitted packet so you can answer follow-up questions without reconstructing what was sent.

State the disagreement specifically

A useful notice response identifies the disputed issue, the figure in question, and the evidence supporting a different result. Broad statements that a bill is unfair do not explain a factual error. Follow the response method and date printed on the actual notice. Different notices can involve different review or appeal procedures.

Build a short evidence index

Use a cover explanation that links each point to a numbered supporting document. Include copies where the instructions request them and keep your originals. Identify any amount you agree with separately from the disputed amount. Save everything submitted and its delivery or submission evidence. Ask for qualified help when the notice raises hearing, court, or other procedural rights.

  • Identify each disputed figure
  • Link points to supporting records
  • Preserve the notice deadline

Questions to consider

Will a general complaint preserve every appeal right?

Do not assume that. Follow the applicable notice's instructions and seek timely qualified advice about procedural requirements.
