Notice response or amended return: identify the task

An agency adjustment and an error you discovered on your return can require different procedures.

Updated October 23, 2026 · 2 min read · General educational information

Start with your situation

Write one sentence describing the actual error and one describing what the letter requests. If those are different, ask how the two processes should be coordinated before submitting extra filings.

Identify the correction before refiling

An amended return corrects certain information on a previously filed return. It is not automatically the correct response to every letter, delayed refund, or missing payment. Compare the original return, supporting records, and any agency explanation. The proper procedure, permitted filing method, and timing depend on the year and type of correction.

Write a before-and-after explanation

List the original entry, corrected entry, reason, and supporting record. Check whether related schedules or state filings also need review. Follow the current instructions for the applicable return and retain both versions. If there is an active agency notice, confirm how the correction relates to its response instructions rather than assuming a separate amendment answers the notice.

  • Keep original and corrected records
  • Explain each changed entry
  • Check notice-specific instructions

Questions to consider

Should every IRS letter trigger an amended return?

No. Some issues require a notice response, supporting documents, payment tracing, or another process instead.
